Aperture Card Scanning September 22nd, 2011

Aperture cards (ACs) are the old-fashioned PC cards of ancient times. The only noticeable difference is that they have a cut-out rectangle containing a 35mm drawing or several 16mm documents. Many engineering firms still use ACs on an every day basis. ACs usually contain blueprints, drawings, maps, schematics, or deed records. Some ACs may have a drawing number, address, or other data typed or handwritten on the top of the card. Small punch holes (Hollerith code) may also be present.

aperture card scanning

Aperture scanning is the process of converting that old analog media to digital image. In other words, instead of hunting for a particular AC and using a microfilm viewer or reader printer, you can simply bring the image up on your computer screen. You can e-mail it, print it, share it, make copies, and enhance the image.

Aperture card scanning enables the images to be indexed and a database or spreadsheet to be created from the data contained on the headers or Hollerith code.

Black & white (actually called bi-tonal) or greyscale images can be produced. Most clients choose a PDF format, but TIFF and JPEG are also viable options for aperture card scanning.

Generation Imaging’s employees have experience with hundreds of aperture card scanning jobs over the years.  There is no need for you to learn aperture card scanning from scratch; let the paperless experts take care of it for you. You know it’s time for your organization to become more efficient and go digital. So please contact Generation Imaging today for your aperture card scanning price quote.

Aperture cards

The housing bubble effected every industry.

Aperture Card Scanning News and  Economic Trends

Aperture card digitization services will be seeing positive changes in the near future, as a consequence of improvements in the housing industries.

Some government agencies, engineering firms, and power plants have been affected by the economy’s problems and had to cancel aperture scanning projects. In many cases, there was a direct correlation between the housing industry and the cash used by these government agencies to pay for these projects. In some cases, fees applied to building permits generated cash that were used for funding aperture card conversion projects. The near dead housing industry meant that fees from building and zoning permits also disappear and this was money lost from the budgets. A result of the lost in business from these government organizations has been cancellation of many aperture conversion projects.

According to some studies, a continued population growth and a near stand still home building may force positive changes. The information revealed that 1.6 million new homes are needed each year to keep up with population growth. The information also showed that within two years, the inventory of new homes will be gone, and it takes about a year to build a new home.

Very few homes have been build recently, while the population has continued to rise. New house construction needs to start to avoid a deficiency of housing in the near future. A deficiency of housing may be a bigger problem that what exist today, according to the study. Either way, whether we foresee this issue now or later, it seems apparent that the housing industry will necessity to resume some new development within a year or so. Once a demand for housing sets in, the market should be motivated to increase construction.

An increase in development means an instant increase of building permits for development and zoning changes. Fees collected from permits will allow government offices some breathing room. Aperture card scanning projects will also have an increase chance of materializing.

Aperture card scanning is needed to convert many of the files that now reside on old PC data cards called apertures. Many organizations have significant amounts of documents on aperture card they need to be converted into PDFs, TIFFs, or JPEG images. Aperture card scanning will convert information from film to a digital file format. A digital system is able to provide better customer service and save money. In addition, there is an ongoing cost savings to the agency because the electronic system requires less labor to operate. Aperture card conversion is an important part of the process.

Generation Imaging digitizes aperture cards all the time. Generation imaging can convert your aperture scanning project, small or large.

Digitizing aperture cards has become standard practice for nuclear power plants or energy municipalities. Converting aperture cards to PDF or TIFF and linking the digital images to an Access database, custom made Excel form, or CSV file is a very efficient way of organizing your data.

Scanning aperture cards and creating a database is a specialized service and many power plants must outsource aperture card scanning. Another factor is how the indexing data can be extracted. Convert aperture cards to digital image June 29th, 2009

admin
Many organizations  handle aperture cards on a daily basis to access their information- usually engineering drawings, building blue prints, or title records. Although this has been a common practice for many years, aperture card scanning technologies has been changing this dynamic. If you use aperture cards to store your documents, you are probably thinking there has to be a better way.

The process of digitizing aperture cards has been around for some time now, only a few well established microfiche conversion organizations- like this digital imaging company- have the required equipment and knowledge to safeguard your apertures and to achieve the best possible digital conversion results. This digital imaging company will transfer the information you have on your apertures to a digital format, such as TIFF, JPEG, PDF, etc. Digital conversion is ideal for storing and retrieving documents, especially since aperture card scanners can read Hollerith code punches.

In the meantime, while you are still using your aperture cards as your document source, make sure you do all you can to conserve the integrity of the cards. This is the first step in aperture card preparation. Keep the cards in a temperature and humidity control environment. The  frame also has a sensitive side which is called the emulsion side. This is what makes up the image on the film. It is very sensitive to scratches.
Lastly, there is the issue of time. If your aperture cards are beginning to smell like vinegar, you need to consider document imaging as a way to preserve the information. The smell you sense may be the natural process of your cards decomposing. If you do nothing, you may lose all your data.

Digital imaging is ideal for storing and retrieving documents. Contact us for additional information.
